ADLER – A name that promises success
With around 620 employees, ADLER is Austria's leading manufacturer of paints, varnishes and wood preservatives. The success story began with a small paint shop opened by Johann Berghofer in 1934 in Schwaz's old town. In the shop's storerooms, he started making oil paints, matting, polishes and floor cleaning agents. When the founder of the ADLER plant died unexpectedly at the age of 54, his son, engineer Günther Berghofer, took over the business with 45 employees, supported by his mother Hermine Berghofer. From the small paint business emerged the ADLER brand.
Markets and customers
Almost 18,000 tonnes of paint leave the Schwaz paint factory every year and go to customers in more than 25 countries worldwide. Around two-thirds of production is exported. Germany and Italy are the most important export markets, but ADLER is also active in Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, France, Greece, Israel, Russia, Ukraine and many other countries. Austria is at the centre of strategic thinking as a home market with the sole production and research location Schwaz. Service support centres and depot warehouses in Vienna, Linz, St. Pölten, Graz, Klagenfurt, Dornbirn, Spittal an der Drau (A), Tuggen (CH), Herford (D), Essenbach (D) and Dornstadt near Ulm (D) ensure that all orders are delivered within 24 hours. Alongside joiners and furniture and window manufacturers, ADLER also counts painters and do-it-yourselfers among its customers. ADLER is able to assert its market leadership in Austria in the field of furniture varnishes and window coating systems as well as in the do-it-yourself sector. Do-it-yourselfer products are sold by 120 specialist paint stores – called the ADLER Farbenmeister.
Clean work, clean environment
Two-thirds of the approximately 10,000 articles are manufactured on a water-dilutable basis. The fact that ADLER does not just pay lip service to environmental protection is demonstrated by new ecological and sustainable products, numerous awards and certifications, under which the paint factory regularly undergoes strict inspections. Innovation and research play an important role in this – which explains why around 110 of ADLER's 620 employees are employed in this area.
Committed to the founder's spirit, ADLER-Werk Lackfabrik remains a family business to this day. Since 1999, the company has been headed in the third generation by Andrea Berghofer, daughter of long-term managing partner engineer Günther Berghofer.
