Powerful and handy
New MAFELL cross-cutting systems
KSS 60 and KSS 60 36B
Miter and cross-cuts are often required in woodworking. Now MAFELL, the inventor of the cross-cutting system, is offering the first kit with a cutting depth of 61 mm (2 3/8 inch). The new KSS 60 combines the power of much larger machines with exceptional handiness. The cross-cutting system is available with mains connection or as a cordless version with a powerful 36 Volt battery. The battery-powered KSS 60 36B is therefore ideal for working on scaffolding or on roofs.
MAFELL offers the market's most extensive range of single-handed cross-cutting systems, with cutting depths of 82 mm (3 1/4 inch) (KSS 80/370), 61 mm (2 3/8 inch) (KSS 60 and KSS 60 36B), 49.5 mm 1 15/16 inch) (KSS 400 and 400 36B) and 40 mm (1 9/16 inch) (KSS 40 18M bl and KSS 300). “Our aim is to offer the tradesman a solution for his tasks without having to make compromises,” explains Ralf Kohler, head of sales and marketing.
What all the models have in common is the characteristic operating principle and basic concept of single-handed cross-cutting systems: the user takes the machine to the work, not the work to the machine. More and more woodworkers value the time benefits and precision of cross and angle cuts made in combination with the guide track, especially when carrying out assembly work on site.
The powerful 1,800 Watt CUprex motor facilitates the execution of cross and miter cuts when machining solid structural timbers 60 mm (2 3/8 inch) thick and cutting insulating boards up to 60 mm (2 3/8) thick. When working on scaffolding or on roofs in particular, the relatively low weight of 6.1 kg (13.45 lbs) (6.6 kg / 14,55 lbs KSS 60 36B) saves strength and effort compared to machines with larger cutting depths.
The cutting depth of 61 mm (2 3/8 inch) is also required, for example, when machining supporting structures for facade elements, when building post-and-beam walls, when cutting and fitting strings and treads in staircase construction and when shortening doors.
With the KSS 60, MAFELL has also provided a solution for cutting fiberboard used to insulate roofs, ceilings and walls. With this in mind, the channel in the guard has been optimized for the large chip volumes arising with wood fiber insulating materials.
The machine can be detached from the track quickly and easily by flicking the catch, allowing rip, bevel and plunge cuts to be executed as well. For rip cuts the portable circular saw can be operated with the handy parallel fence, the MAFELL guide rail system F or the Aerofix F-AF 1 suction clamping system.
In addition, the cross-cutting system offers an impressive range of practical features for precision and speed when working. The pointer automatically follows the machine as it is tilted. This ensures that the correct cutting edge is always indicated. By releasing a lock, the cutting depth is set quickly and reliably on a clearly legible scale with fine graduation. If repeat cuts have to be made, the cutting depth can be locked exactly in the range from 2 to 61 mm (0 1/16 to 2 3/8 inch) by means of a repeat stop.
The MAFELL portable circular saw KSS 60 comes with a parallel fence and is available either in the MAFELL T-MAX case or boxed. The cordless version KSS 60 36B includes two lithium ion batteries delivering 94 Watt hours and is supplied in a carrying case.
Cross-cutting system operating principle
With the cross-cutting system, the machine is permanently attached to the guide track. One fixed and one adjustable stop on the underside of the track allow precision cross and angle cuts to be made. The system is pushed up against the workpiece edge with the two stops, and then the cut is executed. Afterwards the track returns to the starting position.
Founded in 1899, the family enterprise is a manufacturer of high-end portable machines and power tools for professional users in the carpentry and joining segments in particular. Recognized for its expertise in materials and technology, and for translating its quality awareness into practice, MAFELL offers users the compelling benefits of innovation, performance, precision and durability. Around 300 highly skilled employees work in the company's sole production facility in Oberndorf am Neckar near Stuttgart. Compared with its peers in the industry, MAFELL's vertical range of manufacturing is exceptional.
