Structured surfaces: A Hi Tech product.
The market trend was already noticeable, the furniture shows just ended convinced the last sceptic customer: Antique optics is up-to-date again: being sawed, stamped, planed, or structured, the customers love the natural look of these wood surfaces.
As a woodworking machine builder MB has to adapt to these new trends to offer to the customer adequate solutions. For this purpose MB presented a complete new design to the market to adapt to the requirements of this industrial application.
Since the customers come from the furniture or panel industry and want to stand out from their competitors respectively by fine variations, a structuring machine needs a given flexibility and precision. Further a deep insight in tooling is needed, based on long time experience.
The heavy duty MB Roba Struktumat series offers, connected with the knowledge around this technology, best prerequisites to achieve a satisfactory result.
The welded heavy steel construction of the Struktumat is prerequisite for the installation of efficient tools with a diameter of 250 mm to run without any vibration. Extremely powerful motors up to 15 kW drive the structuring brushes and guarantee high penetration depths at stable rotational speeds.
The basic machine Struktumat 1300/3 is equipped with three processing aggregates. Fewer aggregates mean obviously that compromises on the result have to be made in respect to the achieved visual impression and the surface quality. Especially in hardwood operations this is important.
A spiral drum with steel wires in dense trimming is "tearing up" the wood surface to prepare it for the post-processing. During this process step the wood surface is carved while the intensity is depending on the involved tool. Soft wood grain is worked out more deeply than the hard annual rings.
This process produces up standing wood fibres, particularly unavoidably if you work against the wood grain. These must be eliminated thoroughly since otherwise the haptics and appearance of the stained, lacquered or oiled surfaces would be unacceptable.
To avoid this and to give the surface more depth, a post-processing with the next two rollers is necessary. Equipped with special tools of different grit, wire strength and density, the wood fibres are cut, the structured surface worked out deeply and the surface will be prepared for the finish. According to our experience this complex process cannot be managed with one tool. You can only achieve a result if the machine gets a fine adjusted combination of the first drum followed by further two.
On the other side a three aggregate machine may save costs at machine purchase, but will be paid by the customer by a lot of re-work on the product.
Based on this experience much more customers ask nowadays for a four drum machine. This creates the necessary flexibility to “design” our own result while quality is improved at the same time.
Another product character of the MB Struktumat series is use of high-quality features like motorized axes setting, PLC based component drive and programmable production parameters via Touch Screen.
Since the devil is in detail at the determination of the surface expression, reproducibility of an evaluated result is a must in the industrial mass production. And if the user once experienced that a 1/10 of a millimetre makes a difference in regards to the desired surface, he will learn to love these advantages. Primarily veneered surfaces require this special attention. Therefore MB chooses the uncompromising way with strict view on the result what only allows using technology on the machine side.
But not only the flexibility and precision of the machine is a crucial factor for a perfect result. Also the choice of the appropriate tool requires much experience in connection with substantial tests. The MB test laboratory provides a variety of tools to be combined in either way.
